Blistering Start Lifts Hatters Past Chattanooga 78-67

Chambers Scores a Career-High 26 Points

DeLand, Fla. -- Brittney Chambers celebrated her 22nd birthday in style, scoring a career-high 26 points as Stetson rolled to a 78-67 victory over visiting Chattanooga Wednesday night at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (2-1) shot nearly 60 percent from the floor, including a 10-for-14 performance from Chambers.

Stetson stormed out of the gate, hitting 10-of-11 shots in the opening quarter and playing shutdown defense to take a commanding 30-8 lead.

"I was proud of our start and how we came out ready to play," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.

Chambers scored 19 of her points in the first half alone as Stetson extended its lead to 50-25 at the break.

"I thought (Brittney) carried us considering McKenna was (in foul trouble)," Bria said.  "We needed someone to handle the ball and play the point.  I thought she did a really good job of managing the game for us until we could get McKenna back in."

The teams played even in the third quarter, but Chattanooga (0-3) made a huge run in the fourth quarter, trimming Stetson's lead down to 16 with three minutes to go.  Chambers then made what Bria called the "play of the game," taking a charge in the lane to help slow the Mocs' momentum.

"We work on getting back (on defense) in practice, so I just tried to be in a good position to take a charge," Chambers said.

Stetson did not make a field goal in the fourth quarter, but the Hatters converted 10-of-12 free throws to help seal the victory.

"I thought the fourth quarter really hurt us," Bria said.  "I felt like we turned it over entirely too much and really lost focus."

McKenna Beach hit three 3-pointers and scored 16 points, Kennedi Colclough scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds while playing a full 40 minutes, and Sydney Wagner added 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting.  Jordan Tully scored six points off the bench.

Keiana Gilbert led the Mocs with 24 points.

The Hatters will play at the Savannah Invitational next week, beginning with a contest at 2 p.m. Tuesday against Wright State.
