Hatters Comeback Efforts Fall Just Short

Chambers records first career double-double

Savannah, Ga. -- Stetson mounted a huge fourth quarter rally but came up inches short as Wright State held on for a 64-59 victory Tuesday afternoon in the first game of the Savannah Invitational.

Battling from behind the entire contest, the Hatters (2-2) cut a 14-point fourth quarter deficit all the way down to one on Kennedi Colclough's lay-up with 34 seconds to play.  After the Raiders (3-1) answered with a basket of their own with 7.7 to go, Brittney Chambers saw a potential game-tying 3-pointer hit the front rim and bounce out in the closing seconds.

Wright State hit two free throws for the final margin.

"I was proud of our fight," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "I thought we fought hard, I thought we hung in there, and we gave ourselves an opportunity to win the game."

The Raiders led by five after the first quarter and by nine at the half, despite a 12-0 Stetson run in the second quarter.  Wright State extended the lead to 44-29 in the third quarter and still led 55-41 with 7:44 to go in the fourth before the Hatters made their final push.

"I thought we got more aggressive," Bria said.  "We started to attack the basket better.  We got to the free throw line a little bit more, and I thought we got stops when we needed to.  We went on a run and gave ourselves a chance to win."

Chambers led the Hatters with 21 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.  Colclough scored 16 points and grabbed seven boards.  McKenna Beach added 11 points.

Stetson shot just 37 percent from the floor and 1-for-10 from 3-point range.  The Hatters fared much better at the free throw line, converting 16-of-17 attempts.  Chambers was 9-for-9 from the line.

Defensively, Stetson held Wright State to 25 points below their season scoring average of 89.0 ppg.

The Savannah Invitational continues Wednesday as the Hatters battle the Florida Gators at 7 p.m.

Notes:
  • The Hatters also battled foul trouble throughout the game as two players fouled out and two others had four fouls
  • McKenna Beach hit Stetson's lone 3-pointer, extending the team's streak of games with at least one 3-pointer to 239
  • It was Chambers' third career 20-point game and her second in a row
  • Megan Vincent recorded three blocks
  • Stetson's .941 percentage at the free throw line was the second-best single-game performance in school history with at least 15 makes.  The Hatters went 17-for-18 vs. FIU in 1997
