Hatters Drop ASUN Tournament Heartbreaker

Jacksonville's Alberto Escobedo scored the game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in the second overtime to lift the No. 5 seed Dolphins to a 2-1 win over top-seeded Stetson in the ASUN Conference Tournament semifinals, Sunday at the Athletic Training Center.

Stetson (7-7-2) was forced to play man down for almost the entirety of the match after David Bergstrom received a red card for a handball in the box 92 seconds into the match. That card led to a penalty kick opportunity for JU's Igor Ferreira, and he converted for a 1-0 lead.

Despite being down a man for the final 103 minutes, Stetson controlled play for much of the match and even dominated at times but struggled to penetrate a JU defense which simply packed into the box and attempted to play keep-away.

Stetson, however, did have several excellent scoring chances in the first half. Finn Busmann had an early scoring chance in the first half but his header went off the post, and Daniel O'Brien sent a shot just wide near in the end of the first half as JU held on to a 1-0 lead at intermission.

The Hatters kept up the pressure in the second half and finally broke through when 2017 ASUN Freshman of the Year Deniz Dogan corralled a misplay by the JU defense and blasted a shot into the net from the top of the box in the 87th minute, knotting the game at 1-1.

Stetson nearly won the game in regulation when Chris Degance got loose deep on JU's side with about a minute to play but his shot from 15 yards away was saved by Dolphins' keeper Patrick Harding and the game went to overtime.

Each team had limited chances during overtime before Kai Bennet connected with Escobedo for the game-winner.

The Hatters out-shot JU, 17-10, despite playing down a man.

Jacksonville (6-9-1) next hosts the ASUN Championship against Lipscomb on Saturday, Nov. 11.
