Freshmen Pave the Way in Hatters' 67-30 Win over Webber

The five rookies combine for 36 points

DeLand, Fla. -- Freshman Sydney Wagner drained a season-high five 3-pointers and scored 18 points to help lead Stetson to a 67-30 win over Webber International Friday afternoon in the annual Volusia County Schoolchildren game at the Edmunds Center.

Fellow freshman Michelle Pruitt had nine points and 11 rebounds as the Hatters (5-4) won their second in a row.

"I didn't like our start," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "We have come out and started poorly in a few games, and I don't know why we do that.  I thought as the game went on, we played better.  I thought we played really well in the second half."

In a game where the offense struggled, the Hatters relied on a strong defensive effort, especially in the second half.  Stetson led by just nine at the break but outscored Webber 24-2 in the third quarter and 36-8 over the final 20 minutes.

Pruitt started the third quarter by taking three defensive charges in the first two minutes to help get the ball rolling.

"Michelle really lifted us with those charges," Bria said. "That was good for our team."

All five Hatter freshmen scored, including Shania Meertens who recorded her first career points on a breakaway lay-up in the third quarter.  Megan Vincent recorded a pair of blocks and seven rebounds while Kendall Lentz collected three steals.

"I got to get some of the freshmen in for a long period of time," Bria said. "I thought Syd and Michelle had great games today.  Shania looked really, really good. I like the progress of our freshmen."

Brittney Chambers and Kennedi Colclough each scored 11 points, while McKenna Beach added nine.

Stetson shot just 37 percent but outrebounded the Warriors (2-6) 47-34.

The Hatters will now travel to SIUE for a Sunday afternoon tilt against the Cougars (3-2).  It will be Stetson's fourth game in seven days.

Notes:
  • Webber went 12 minutes without scoring in the second half as the Hatters went on a 27-0 run.
  • Brittney Chambers extended her double figure scoring streak to 15 games.
  • Wagner's five 3s was the most by a Hatter since Brianti Saunders hit five vs. FGCU last season.
  • Stetson recorded season-highs in rebounds (47), blocks (7) and turnovers (23).
  • The Hatters drew five charges (Pruitt-3, Lentz-2).
  • The two points allowed in the third quarter tied a school record for best defensive quarter.
  • The win was the 182nd at Stetson for head coach Lynn Bria, who is just two wins shy of tying the school record of 184.
