Second Half Rally Lifts Stetson to Big Road Win at SIUE

Shania Meertens put Stetson in the lead with a 4th quarter lay-up

Edwardsville, Ill. -- McKenna Beach scored a game-high 16 points, and Brittney Chambers added 15 points and 12 rebounds, as Stetson posted a thrilling 65-61 come-from-behind road victory over SIUE Sunday afternoon at the Vadalabene Center.

A poor start saw the Hatters (6-4) score just 21 first half points, but an inspired second-half on both ends of the floor lifted Stetson to its third win in a row.

"It was a tale of two halves," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "I think in the first half, we played the worst half of basketball we have played all year.  We were sluggish, and it looked like we were tired.

"In the second half, I thought we really got some energy and got going, especially offensively."

Trailing by 13 at the half and by 12 with 15 minutes to go, the Hatters closed the third quarter on a 15-3 run to pull even at 45-45.

In the fourth quarter, the Cougars (3-3) led by one when Shania Meertens grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast for a fastbreak lay-up to give Stetson its first lead of the half.  Chambers then put the Hatters ahead by four with a short jumper at the 2:09 mark, and Colclough floated in a short baseline jumper with 27 seconds to go to help seal the win.

"It was a collective effort," Bria said. "In the locker room, I couldn't point to one player because it wasn't (just one).

"I am just really proud of our team.  I thought we had huge growth today to come back and to fight in an away game like this against a good team.  I think it is a good win for us."

Chambers and Colclough combined for 28 second half points after scoring just two combined points in the first half.  Colclough finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.

"I thought Kennedi was huge for us," Bria said.  "Brittney really responded in the second half and got some big buckets."

The Hatters outrebounded the Cougars 45-34.  Defensively, Stetson held SIUE to just 27 points after the break.

The victory was the 183rd at Stetson for Bria, just one shy of tying the program's all-time coaching wins record.

The Hatters will visit No. 11 Florida State at 7 p.m. Thursday night in Tallahassee.
