Valiant Effort Falls Short at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb.—Nebraska took advantage of a Stetson cold spell late in the second half as the Huskers edged the Hatters, 71-62, Friday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

With both offenses as cold as the Nebraska night air, the Hatters (7-8) and Huskers (10-5) battled through a sluggish, yet entertaining, 40 minutes of basketball. Both teams shot below 40 percent from the field for the game, but a significant late cold spell did in the Hatters.

After Luke Doyle tied the game at 48 with a 3-pointer at the 9:15 mark, the Hatters missed their next nine shots from the field as the Huskers raced out to a 58-48 lead with 4:25 to go.

The Hatters didn't go away down the stretch, closing to within 64-58 on a Larry Dennis jumper with 1:05 to play but they never got any closer.

Stetson fell into an early hole to start the game, trailing 18-9 with 7:56 left in the first half. But the Hatters responded with an 11-2 run over the next 3:52, tying the game at 20 apiece on a Doyle layup with 4:07 left in the half.

The teams were tied, 24-24, at halftime.

Stetson opened the second half with a Doyle three-pointer for Stetson's first lead of the game at 27-24. Nebraska quickly regained the lead but could never get much separation on the scoreboard until the final minutes.

Divine Myles finished with a game-high 17 points, adding nine rebounds, three assists and two steals in a fine all-round effort. Abayomi Iyiola added 15 points and nine boards off the bench, and Doyle chipped in with 12 points.

Isaac Copeland and James Palmer led Nebraska with 13 points each.

The Hatters return to action when they host Florida National, 1 p.m., Monday at Edmunds Center.

News & Notes
  • Divine Myles moved into fifth place on Stetson's career scoring list. His 17-point effort gives him 1,567 career points, moving him past Ron Beal, who scored 1,559 points from 1968-72.
  • Luke Doyle reached double figures for the first time in five games. He made a pair of three-pointers after going a combined 0-12 from beyond the arc in his previous three games
  • Nebraska's .349 field-goal percentage was the lowest for a Stetson Division I opponent this season

Quoting Coach Williams
"I thought we played as well as we could defensively. I thought our guys competed throughout the game. In the end we just didn't take advantage of the some of the opportunities we had. Nebraska made a few more baskets and was able to get to the free throw line a few more times. But I love the effort that we gave tonight."
