Griffin Notches 900th Win as Hatters Sweep on Opening Day

Ashly Smith records four hits and scores four runs

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson Hatters opened the 2017 season with a pair of victories Friday, defeating Akron 11-5 and Savannah State 7-1 at Patricia Wilson Field.

With the win in game two, head coach Frank Griffin earned his 900th career coaching victory. He is the 29th coach in NCAA Division I history to reach that milestone.

"It means a lot, but frankly I am just happy we are 2-0 on the season," Griffin said.  "That is much more important.  That is a great way to start the season."

The Hatters (2-0) collected 15 hits and scored 18 runs on the day.  Ashly Smith led the team with two singles, a double, a home run and four runs scored.  Jessie TenBroeck was on base seven out of nine times.  She scored three runs and drove in four.

In the circle, Tori Perkins went the distance for the win in game one, and Chelsea Hostetler did likewise in game two.  Stetson hit four doubles against Savannah State, including three in a row during a three-run sixth inning.

"I thought we played well enough to win," Griffin said. "We scored a lot of runs.  I thought we made too many errors.  I wasn't happy with all of our hitters.  I thought we had some who came ready to swing the bat and we had some watching strikes with runners in scoring position."

In other games at the Stetson Lead-Off Classic Friday, Kansas defeated Akron 2-1 and Savannah State 16-2.  The Hatters will face Kansas at 4 p.m. Saturday before meeting Akron at 6:30 p.m.

Notes: Jessie TenBroeck stole three bases on the day to mover her career total to 97 … Linda Ross, Molly McLaughlin and Tara Walding each recorded their first career hits … Smith's home run was the sixth of her career.
