Fritts Slam Lifts Hatters Past Akron 10-6

Stetson Falls 4-0 to Kansas in Game One

DeLand, Fla. -- Maggie Fritts couldn't have picked a better time for her first home run as a Hatter.  The junior transfer stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning and the score tied at 6.

"I just remember coach Griffin telling me to be patient and wait for my pitch," Fritts said.

The third pitch was the charm as Fritts drove a 1-1 delivery deep to center field for a grand slam home run, and Stetson held on for an 10-6 win over Akron Saturday night at Patricia Wilson Field.

"I had kind of been in a slump, and it feels so great to get that weight off my chest," Fritts said.  "It was definitely the biggest home run of my career."

Blake Crews and Jessie TenBroeck also homered for the Hatters (3-1), who fell 4-0 to Kansas earlier in the day.

Stetson trailed 1-0 and 6-4 to the Zips (1-3) before scoring six times in the top of the fifth inning.  Linda Ross drove in the first two runs of the inning with a bases loaded single, and Fritts put the Hatters in front to stay.

"It is crazy how much fight this team has," Fritts said.  "Everyone has each other's back, and it's really nice to see that in this team."

Fritts finished the game with a double, a home run and five RBI.  Tori Perkins (2-1) pitched five innings of relief to earn the victory. Jazz Vasquez robbed the Zips of a potential home run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Hatters will complete the Lead-Off Classic at noon Sunday against Savannah State.

Notes: Stetson's last grand slam came off the bat of Jessica Griffin in March of 2015 ... Black Crews hit her first career home run and Jessie TenBroeck hit her fourth ... TenBroeck also stole two bases to put her at 99 for her career.
