Hats Bats Sizzle in Friday Sweep

Stetson Off to its best start in three years

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. -- Stetson scored a combined 20 runs on 21 hits Friday to sweep a pair of games at the Diamond 9 Orange Blossom Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports.

The Hatters defeated Providence 9-3 in the opener and LIU Brooklyn 11-6 in the nightcap to improve to 6-1 on the season.

Stetson is off to its best start since 2014.

"I thought we hit the ball well all through the line-up," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "We took advantage of some situations and our baserunning was really good. We got some clutch hitting and that is always important."

Stetson was 4-for-7 with the bases loaded and 6-for-12 with runners in scoring position against LIU Brooklyn.

Kelsey Waters had five hits on the day, while Tara Walding and Blake Crews drove in four runs apiece.  Jessie TenBroeck and Ashly Smith each scored four runs.

Stetson jumped on Providence (1-1) for four runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Smith and Waters each hit RBI triples, while Walding and Crews also drove in runs.  The Hatters added two runs in the second, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Tori Perkins (4-1) went the distance to earn her fourth win of the year.  She allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out a career-high seven.

"Tori did very well," Griffin said.  "She occasionally gets the ball up in the strike zone and that's when she gets in trouble, but if she can keep the ball down, she is going to be very successful."

Against LIU Brooklyn, the Hatters once again scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 4-0 lead.  However, the Blackbirds answered back with five of their own in the bottom of the first.

That lead was short lived, however, as the Hatters struck for six runs in the top of the second. Crews and Jazz Vasquez each delivered big hits with the bases loaded.

Brooke Hutto (1-0) pitched 4.1 solid innings of relief, keeping the Blackbirds off the scoreboard from the second through the fifth innings.  Perkins worked the final two innings to close out the victory.

"I thought Brooke did a great job," Griffin said.  "She came in in a tough situation, and they scored some runs, but she didn't get rattled.  She went through the line-up twice and then I decided to let Tori finish the job."

Saturday's game times have been up an hour. The Hatters will face Bethune-Cookman at noon and Delaware at 2:15 p.m.

Notes: The Hatters have scored 56 runs in seven games (8.0 per game) … Stetson has posted three six-run innings on the season … The last time Stetson had two triples in one inning was on March 20 last year at UNF (Ashly Smith and Brittany Hawn) … Stetson is batting .311 as a team ... Jessie TenBroeck moved past Chrissy Morello into second place on the Hatters all-time runs scored list (127).
