Hatters Sweep Again on Day Two of the Orange Blossom Classic

Kelsey Waters collects four hits and scores three runs

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. -- Another day, another 20 runs for the Hatters.

Jessie TenBroeck, Kelsey Waters and Ashly Smith each had four hits and Blake Crews drove in six runs as Stetson swept a pair of games Saturday at the Diamond 9 Orange Blossom Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports.

The Hatters defeated Bethune-Cookman 10-5 in the opener and Delaware 10-4 in the nightcap to improve to 8-1 on the season.

Stetson has now won six games in a row and is off to its best start in 13 years.

"I thought we hit the ball well, especially with runners in scoring position," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "It is a sign of good things to come.

"I was especially pleased with Brooke on the mound.  She pitched with confidence for the first time, and I told her that.  I am so happy to see that."

Stetson had 21 hits as a team and scored 20 runs for the second day in a row.

"I think we are coming together as a team and just seeing the ball really well," said Crews, who was 3-for-6 at the plate.  "We are strong 1 through 9."

Against Bethune-Cookman, the Hatters led 3-2 in the fifth when a five-run inning broke the game open.  Tara Walding's two-run double with the bases loaded highlighted the attack.

Tori Perkins (5-1) went the distance for her fifth win of the season.

In the nightcap, the Hatters trailed 2-0 after a first-inning rain delay, but the Hatters scored six runs over the next two frames to pull away.   Crews hit another two-run single in the second and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third.  Smith added a two-run single in the fifth.

Brooke Hutto (2-0) picked up her second win in relief, throwing 3.2 innings and getting the Hatters through the middle innings.  Perkins got the final eight outs.

The Hatters have scored 66 runs in nine games this season, including 40 runs in the past two days at the Orange Blossom Classic.

Stetson will face George Washington at 10 a.m. Sunday in the final game of the tournament.

Notes: Stetson had 11 hits with runners in scoring position Saturday and three with the bases loaded ... Stetson has scored eight or more runs in six straight games ...
