Hatters Power Past Colgate 10-1

Stetson wins its eighth game in a row

DeLand, Fla. -- Thanks to Wednesday's rainout, it had been five days since the Hatters last took the field, and the offense apparently couldn't wait to get back to work.

Stetson hit a pair of home runs and scored 10 times in the first inning alone and cruised to a 10-1 victory over Colgate Friday at the Hatter Invitational at Patricia Wilson Field.

Maggie Fritts hit her second grand slam of the year, Ashly Smith hit a 3-run home run, and Kelsey Waters went 3-for-3 as the Hatters (10-1) extended their win streak to eight.

"The kids were excited to be playing again," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "They have been swinging the bat well in practice.  Jessica Ujvari has been doing a good job working with them and I think it shows."

Tori Perkins and Curstin Taylor combined on a four-hitter.  Taylor pitched the final three innings to earn her first win of the year.

Linda Ross, Waters and Blake Crews drove in Stetson's first three runs of the game, and all three were on base when Fritts belted a one-out blast over the wall in left. It was her third home run of the season, her second slam, and it gave Stetson a 7-0 lead.

The inning was not over, however, and with two on and two outs, Smith hit an opposite field home run to give Stetson a 10-run inning.  It was Smith's second home run of the year.

TenBroeck, Smith and Molly McLaughlin each scored twice while TenBroeck stole two bases.

The Raiders dropped to 1-5.

The Hatters will go for their ninth win in a row when they host SEC foe Ole Miss at 4 p.m. Saturday.
