FGCU Ends Hatters Season in ASUN Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla.—Four different players scored in double figures for FGCU, and a 51-24 rebounding edge helped lead the Eagles to an 87-57 win over Stetson in the opening round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, Monday at Alico Arena.

The loss ends Stetson's season with an 11-21 record. FGCU (24-7) now advances on to the semifinals where they will host Kennesaw State on Thursday.

Derick Newton led the Hatters with 17 points. Divine Myles added 15 with five assists, and Luke Doyle finished with 12 points.

After playing the Eagles close in two regular season games, Stetson couldn't stay with FGCU on Monday. A 13-3 run midway through the second half turned a 12-10 FGCU lead into a 25-13 with 11:40 left before halftime.

After Stetson eventually trimmed the deficit to 33-28, FGCU closed the half on a 15-2 run and led 48-30 at halftime.

The Hatters had opportunities early in the second half to get back in the game. But Stetson was unable to take advantage of FGCU's sluggish start as both teams opened the half missing eight of their first nine shots from the field.

Stetson did make one last charge, using a 7-0 run to get within 52-40 on a pair of free throws by Myles with 12:52 to play. But Johnson countered the Hatter burst with back-to-back 3-pointers to give FGCU a 58-40 lead. The Eagles never led by less than 14 the rest of the way.

FGCU shot 50 percent for the game and owned a 38-16 scoring advantage in the paint. Stetson shot just 33 percent from the field.

Quotable
"I really wanted to send Brian Pegg out the right way. He epitomizes what it means to be a student-athlete. He represented not only this conference but our university very well. He really wanted this for his teammates and it showed after the game." – Stetson head coach Corey Williams
