Hatters Split With Columbia and Colgate

DeLand, Fla. -- A wild night at Patricia Wilson Field saw the Hatters rally from 8-0, 10-5, and 11-10 deficits before eventually falling 12-11 to Colgate late Saturday evening in the Stetson Westin Invitational.

Earlier in the day, Molly McLaughlin hit a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Stetson to a 4-3 win over Columbia.

With the split, the Hatters improved to 19-5 on the season.

Playing as the home team, Colgate scored four runs in the first, one in the second, and three in third to take an early 8-0 lead.

Up against a potential run-rule situation, the Hatters rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to three.  The Raiders (2-8) scored two in the bottom of the fifth to go back up 10-5, but another five-run inning for the Hatters in the sixth tied the game 10-10.

After Colgate went back ahead 11-10 in the bottom of the sixth, the Hatters came back yet again. Linda Ross walked to lead off the inning, stole second, moved to third on Tara Walding's sacrifice, and scored on Erica Corlew's squeeze bunt to tie the game 11-11.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lauren La Terra hit a one-out home run to give Colgate the victory.

Against Columbia, Jessie TenBroeck hit a first-inning home run and Kelsey Waters smashed a two-run shot in the third as Stetson grabbed a 3-1 lead. The Lions scored two in the fourth to pull even.

The score remained tied into extra innings, and with the international tie break in effect, Brooke Hutto successfully pitched out of trouble in the top of the eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth, pinch-runner Talli Sharp started on second, moved to third on Ross' sacrifice and scored on McLaughlin's fly out to center.  It was Stetson's second walk-off win this week.

Hutto (9-1) pitched all eight innings for her ninth win of the year.  TenBroeck scored twice to tie the school record for career runs scored (141).  She also stole her 30th base of the season in game two, giving her four consecutive seasons of 30 stolen bases.

The Hatters will host Ohio State at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
