Hatters Drop 4-0 Decision to Ohio State

DeLand, Fla. -- A seventh-inning grand slam by Alex Bayne accounted for the only runs of the game as visiting Ohio State defeated Stetson 4-0 Tuesday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.

A classic pitcher's duel saw Brooke Hutto pitch four scoreless innings to the start the game, while Tori Perkins (6-4) returned from injury to work the final three frames in relief.

Ohio State starter Lena Springer kept the high-scoring Hatters off the board throughout the game, allowing just three hits over seven innings.

"I thought our pitchers did a really good job," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "I thought their pitcher did a really good job as well.  If we had scored earlier I think we would have had a shot at it.  We left a couple runners in scoring position, and that was our opportunity but we didn't take advantage of it."

The Hatters (19-6) had baserunners in three of the first four innings but could not break through against Springer.  Blake Crews, Jessie TenBroeck and Molly McLaughlin each recorded hits.  Stetson left four runners on base,

The Hatters made some strong defensive plays as well.  Jazz Vasquez made an incredible catch up against the rightcenter field fence in the first inning to save a run, and the middle infielders turned two double plays to help keep the game scoreless.

Stetson will host George Mason in doubleheader at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
