Aggressive Baserunning Helps Hatters Sweep George Mason

Stetson steals 17 bases on the day

Linda Ross hit her first career home run in game one and Tori Perkins fired her seventh career shutout in game two as Stetson swept a doubleheader form visiting George Mason, 6-4 and 4-0 Wednesday evening at Patricia Wilson Field.

Jessie TenBroeck also became Stetson's all-time leader in runs scored when she touched home for the 142nd time in her career.

The Hatters (21-6) tied a school single-game record with 10 stolen bases in game one, then added seven more steals in game two.  With the 17 steals on the day, Stetson now leads the NCAA with 95 stolen bases this season.

"I think everyone on our team has good speed on the bases, and we are just really aggressive in taking the opportunities that we have," Ross said.

The Hatters scored 10 runs on the day and collected 20 hits but left 17 runners on base.

"We stole some bases, but I was a little disappointed in our bats," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "We got outhit in the second game.  I don't think we are going to the plate with a strategy.  We don't have a plan.  We are just going up there to have an at-bat.  It is a sign of a young team, but if we go up there with a plan, I think it will help."

Perkins (7-4) allowed nine hits over seven innings but pitched out of bases loaded jams in the first and seventh to keep the Patriots (3-15) off the board.  She struck out five and walked one.

Brooke Hutto (10-1) earned her 10th win of the season in game one. She allowed just five hits and two earned runs while going the distance.

"I thought both pitchers did a good job tonight, and give (George Mason) credit, they swung the bats and put it in play," Griffin said.

Ross led the team with three RBI on the day.  Kelsey Waters stole five bases and TenBroeck stole four.

It had been 22 years since Stetson last stole 10 bases in a game, in February of 1995 against Florida A&M.

The Hatters will wrap up non-conference play with a doubleheader against Bucknell at 4 p.m. Friday.
