The second game of the Hatters baseball series against Fairfield on Saturday afternoon looked remarkably like Friday's first game.
Â
The only difference is that Stetson was unable to score against Stags' pitcher Gavin Wallace (3-1), who needed just 98 pitches to go the distance in a 6-0 shutout of the Hatters.
Â
The loss was the fourth straight for Stetson and dropped the Hatters to 7-14 on the year. Fairfield improved to 5-9 on the season. The teams will square off one final time on Sunday, with the first pitch slated for noon.
Â
Fairfield used three hits and one Stetson error in the first inning to jump on Hatters' starter
Jack Perkins (1-3) for a 3-0 lead. Like Friday's game when the Stags did the same against Stetson starter
Brooks Wilson, those three runs were all they would need.
Â
Catcher Kevin Radziewicz, who had a pair of hits on Friday, delivered a two-run single in the first to follow up on a throwing error by Perkins that allowed the first run to score.
Â
Radziewicz picked up his third RBI in the third inning when his ground ball to short scored a run. He had a hand in the Stags' two-run sixth as well when he singled in front of Troy Scocca's home run.
Â
The Hatters had chances to score throughout the game, but were never able to get the clutch hit they needed.
Austin Bogart led off the second with a double, but was left stranded at third.
Jorge Arenas singled to open the third, but was left at second.
Â
Colton Lightner reached on a one-out double in the sixth, but never advanced.
Kirk Sidwell opened the sixth with a single, but was erased on a double play before
Austin Hale and Arenas had back-to-back two-out hits.
Â
In the ninth,
Jack Gonzalez reached on a one-out single and Hale followed by drawing a walk. Arenas then hit into a game-ending double play.
Â
Wallace scattered seven hits and struck out nine in going the distance. Jack Gathings had two hits to go with the two by Radziewicz.
Â
The Hatters will try to snap a four-game losing skid on Sunday when they send sophomore
Logan Gilbert (2-0) to the mound to face Fairfield senior Tyler Dube (0-1).
