Hatters Return Home To Host Westin Lake Mary Stetson Invitational

Saint Joseph's, Connecticut and Western Michigan to Compete

After taking an excruciating loss on Tuesday night at Bethune-Cookman in extra innings, the Hatters return to Melching Field to open another five-game home stand, starting with the Westin Lake Mary Stetson Invitational.

Tournament play will start on Friday at 1 p.m. when Connecticut (4-3) squares off against Western Michigan (2-5). The Hatters (4-5) will face Saint Joseph's (0-6) in the nightcap.

On Saturday, the Hawks will face the Broncos at 1 p.m. with the Hatters and Huskies to play the late game. Sunday's schedule will pit Saint Joseph's against UConn at 11 a.m. with Stetson and Western Michigan set to meet at 3 p.m.

All of the games will be broadcast on HatterVision.

The Hatters have to bounce back after giving up an 8-1 lead in a 9-8 loss to the Wildcats Tuesday night in Daytona. The loss broke a streak of 97 consecutive wins for the Hatters in games in which they took a lead to the ninth inning.

The last time Stetson lost when leading after eight innings was March 23, 2013, when Mercer scored four times in the top of the ninth to take a 7-4 victory. The Hatters were 27-0 in 2016 when leading after eight innings, 25-0 in 2015 and 23-0 in 2014.

Junior Brooks Wilson will go back to the mound for his third start this year, still looking for his first win. He pitched eight no-hit innings against High Point last Friday but did not get a decision in a game the Hatters lost 4-3 in 10 innings. Wilson has gone his last 9.2 innings without allowing a hit with 16 strikeouts over that stretch.

He will be opposed by Saint Joseph's sophomore right-hander Tim Brennan (0-1, 8.00).

Hatter Quick Hitters
  • Through the first nine games this year, Stetson has played five one-run games, including three that were decided in extra innings.
  • Coming into the 2017 season, the Hatters had a 68-51 record in one-run games over the previous 10 season.
  • The most one-run games in any of the previous 10 years was 17 in 2013, with an 11-6 mark in those games.
  • Since the 2002 season, the Hatters have an overall record of 26-24 in extra-inning games.
  • The most extra-inning games for Stetson during that time was five in 2011.
  • Hatters' freshman Austin Bogart made his first start on the mound in Tuesday's game. He also served as the designated hitter in the game and batted in the cleanup spot in the order. In his four innings on the mound, Bogart allowed just one run on one hit. At the plate, he singled in a run in the third inning and hit a three-run home run in the fifth, finishing his night 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and three runs scored.
  • Stetson's pitching staff is racking up strikeouts like crazy again this year. The group has combined for 97 strikeouts in nine games, which has the staff on pace to obliterate the team record for strikeouts in a season. That mark was set last year at 485.
  • The is the 14th overall season for the Stetson Invitational Tournament. The event started in 1993 and was played in 1994 and 1995 before taking a six year hiatus. The tournament returned in 2002 and was played in 03, 04 and 06 before taking another break. It has been played every season since 2010 except 2015.
  • The Hatters have an overall record of 29-16 in the Invitational.
  • Stetson has won just four of its 11 games in the event since 2012.
  • This is the first year in the event for Saint Joseph's and Western Michigan. Connecticut is back for its second visit after going 3-0 in the 2013 tournament.
