Stetson Splits With Kennesaw State to Open ASUN Play

Brooke Hutto fires a one-hit shutout; Waters homers

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson starter Brooke Hutto was not upset at losing her no-hit bid in the top of the seventh inning.  In fact, she didn't even realize she was two outs away from making history until after Noelle Winkles' one-out double gave Kennesaw State its first base hit of the game.

Instead, Hutto got to work on retiring the final two batters – both on comebackers – to give Stetson a 3-0 win and a split in Saturday's ASUN doubleheader.

The Owls (23-9, 1-1) took game one 4-0 in 10 innings in a terrific pitcher's duel between Tori Perkins and Alley Cutting.  The rubber game of the three-game series will be Sunday at 1 p.m.

"I was really pleased with our pitchers," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "I thought their pitchers also did a good job.  I was really disappointed in our offense.  Fortunately, we were able to keep their bats in check as well."

Hutto (12-1) tossed her first career one-hit shutout, allowing just one walk and just one baserunner as far as third base.  She retired 12 in a row at one point through the middle innings and threw just 81 pitches for the game.

"They are a really good hitting team, and they hit the ball well, but our defense made some plays and helped me out," Hutto said.

Kelsey Waters was the offensive hero, hitting a solo home run in the first inning and an RBI triple in the fifth.  She later scored on a sacrifice fly by Blake Crews to account for all three Hatter runs.

"Those hits were big," Griffin said.  "That won the game for us, no doubt."

Hutto's performance came on the heels of great outing by Perkins in game one.  The Hatter sophomore struck out six, walked two, and she kept the Owls off the scoreboard through the first nine innings.

"Tori was in control," Griffin said.  "She was spotting it where she needed to and spinning the ball well.  She stayed ahead in the count.  Brooke was the same way in game two.  She continues to pitch with confidence, and we played good defense behind them."

While Perkins was shutting down the Owls, Cutting was keeping the Hatters (23-8, 1-1) at bay as well.  With the international tie-break in effect in the 10th inning, KSU scored four times to finally snap the scoreless draw.  Katey Lynch hit a two-run triple to lead the Owls.

Stetson stole two bases in game one, giving the team 100 steals on the season.  It is the second year in a row and the fourth time in school history the Hatters have hit the century mark on the bases.

Notes: Waters now has a league-leading six triples this season and 11 for her career.  The last Hatter with six triples in a season was Sherrell Fountain with eight in 2006 ... The Hatters improved to 17-1 when scoring first and 17-0 when leading after six innings ... Stetson's last one-hit shutout came by Tori Perkins against George Mason in 2016 ... The Hatters played an 11-inning game against Jacksonville last season.  The team's last 10+ inning game at home came on April 19, 2014 against Lipscomb (13 innings). The Hatters last played nine scoreless innings on Apr. 15, 2009 at UNF.
