Hatters Drop Series Finale in 10 Innings

DeLand, Fla. -- Noelle Winkles hit a two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning to help Kennesaw State defeat Stetson 5-4 Sunday afternoon in the ASUN series finale at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Owls (24-9, 2-1 ASUN) won the hard-fought series two games to one over the Hatters (23-9, 1-2) with both victories coming in 10-inning games.

Stetson trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but back-to-back singles by Talli Sharp and Jessie TenBroeck and a sacrifice from Jazz Vasquez put the tying runs in scoring position.  Kennesaw State then tried to walk Kelsey Waters intentionally, but the third delivery got past catcher Courtney Sutter allowing Sharp to score.  Sutter's throw back to home plate was errant, and TenBroeck quickly dashed home with the tying run.

Stetson's Brooke Hutto and KSU's Alley Cutting kept the score deadlocked through the eighth and ninth innings, but with the international-tie-break in effect, Winkles led off the 10th with a go-ahead home run to right field.

The Hatters got one run back in the bottom of the 10th but could pull no closer.

Stetson managed just six hits on the day, all singles, including two by TenBroeck and two by Tara Walding.  Sharp and Linda Ross collected the other two hits.

Stetson starter Tori Perkins pitched two scoreless innings, and Hutto (12-2) tossed the final eight innings of relief.

Both teams left 10 runners on base.

The Hatters will have a bye weekend next weekend before returning to action April 8-9 at Lipscomb.

Notes: The last time Stetson played two 10-inning games in the same season was 2010 (3).
