Hatters Split at Lipscomb on Saturday

Jessie TenBroeck steals five bases; collects 200th hit

Nashville, Tenn. -- Tori Perkins pitched a five-hit shutout and Ashly Smith drove in a pair of eighth-inning runs as visiting Stetson (24-10, 2-3 ASUN) defeated Lipscomb 2-0 Saturday in game one of an ASUN doubleheader at Draper Diamond.

The Lady Bisons (28-12, 4-4) took game two 5-3 to gain a split.  The teams will play the series rubber game at Noon ET on Sunday.

Jessie TenBroeck stole five bases on the day, and in the process tied the ASUN all-time stolen base record with her 136th career steal.  She also recorded her 200th career hit in the form of a bases-loaded double in game two.

Perkins and Mandy Jordan locked up in pitcher's duel in game one as neither team scored through the first seven innings.  Jazz Vasquez led off the eighth with a single to left and moved to third when TenBroeck's sacrifice bunt attempt was misplayed.  Two batters later, Ashly Smith drove an 0-2 pitch right back through the middle to score Vasquez and TenBroeck with the only runs of the game.  Smith finished with two line drive hits in her first game back from illness.

"I thought both pitchers did an outstanding job," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "We were just fortunate to get the first couple runs home and that was all it took.  Ashly hit the ball real well."

Perkins (8-6) allowed just five hits and no runs while striking out three.  She held Lipscomb to 0-for-12 offensively with runners on base.  It was her eighth career shutout and her third against the Lady Bisons.

Defensively, Stetson turned a pair of double plays in game one and Vasquez made a diving catch in center field to rob Chloe Yeager of a hit.

"Our defense was outstanding," Griffin said.  "I thought there were several good plays. It was solid all the way around."

In game two, Sarah Higgins hit a first inning home run for the Lady Bisons that proved to be the difference in the game.  The Hatters rallied for two runs in the sixth on TenBroeck's bases-loaded double to cut Stetson's deficit to 3-2.  However, the Lady Bisons answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to regain a three-run cushion.

Jordan Davis drove in a run in the top of the seventh seventh to cap the scoring.  Brooke Hutto (12-3) pitched a complete game in the circle.

"We couldn't take advantage of our opportunities and Lipscomb did," Griffin said.  "It was a split on the road, so I am happy.  If we can come back tomorrow and take the series, I will be real happy about that."
