Clutch Hitting Lifts Hatters to a Doubleheader Sweep

Brooke Hutto Wins Two Games in the Circle

Tuesday's doubleheader sweep of Providence didn't feature the usual offensive barrage the Hatters have grown accustomed to of late.  In fact, Stetson had to rally from an early 4-0 deficit to win game one 5-4.

Stetson led for most of game two and held off a late charge by the Friars to win 5-3.

The victories were Stetson's fifth and sixth in a row and improved the team's record to 16-3 on the season.

"I thought we played well enough to win, but we didn't play our best either game," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "To win playing a 'B' game, you have to be pleased with that.  I think we are capable of playing better.  We made some mistakes that I think we can improve on."

Maggie Fritts and Jazz Vasquez each hit home runs, Kelsey Waters extended her hitting streak to 14 games in a row, and Brooke Hutto picked up a pair of wins in the circle.

Seven of Stetson's 10 RBI on the day came with two outs.

"We really hit the ball and put the ball in play when we needed to, and our pitchers did such a good job today," Fritts said.

In game one, Stetson trailed 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Waters singled to left to score Ashly Smith with the Hatters first run.  Two batters later and with two outs, Fritts tied the game with a three-run home run to right field for her fourth round tripper of the season.

The Hatters took the lead for good in the fifth when Smith squeezed home Jessie TenBroeck from third.  Hutto made the one-run lead hold up, working out of a second-and-third, one-out jam in the top of the seventh to nail down the win.

The four-run comeback was Stetson's largest since March of 2014.

"I think there is always a feeling we can come back," Hutto said.  "We have hit the ball well this year and we play good defense, so as a pitcher I wasn't worried that we would get on the board."

Chelsea Hostetler pitched the first 4.1 innings of game one.

In game two, Hutto went the distance to improve to 7-0 on the year.  The Hatters led 5-2 going into the top of the seventh when Providence (3-9) scored once and put the tying runs on base.  However, Hutto retired Paige Mulry on an infield pop out to preserve the victory.

Jazz Vasquez went 2-for-3 in game two and hit a solo home run to straight away center field in the bottom of the fourth.  She also threw out a runner trying to score with a one-hop strike to the plate from center field.

"I am happy to see (Jazz) swing away," Griffin said.  "We have been talking about it, trying to get her in a little more athletic position at the plate and a little more flex in her knees.  She has been listening well and I think the results are starting to show."

The Hatters stole eight bases on the day, including three by Smith.  TenBroeck stole her NCAA-leading 27th base of the year.  Stetson also turned three double plays.

The Hatters will look to stay red-hot when they host Mount St. Mary's for a single game at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Notes: Stetson is off to its best start since 2006 ... The Hatters have now won 71 games in a row when leading after six innings.
