Walding Squeezes Home Winning Run as Hats Win 5-4

DeLand, Fla. -- Tara Walding laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Linda Ross with the game-winning run as Stetson walked-off with a 5-4 victory over Mount St. Mary's Wednesday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Hatters won their seventh game in a row and improved to 17-3 on the season.

With the score tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Ross and Molly McLaughlin led off with back-to-back walks.  After a Mount St. Mary's pitching change, a wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position.  Then on a 1-1 pitch, Walding laid a bunt down the first base line, allowing Ross to sprint home and slide in ahead of throw for the winning run.

"Coach Griffin and I talked (during the pitching change) about whether I would go backside or bunt," Walding said.  "We took a pitch to see where she was pitching, and on the next, he gave me the squeeze.  I just tried to do whatever I could to lay it down."

Stetson trailed 2-1 early, but a three-run third inning gave the Hatters a 4-2 lead.

The Mountaineers (3-7) tied it in the fifth when sisters Rachel Heinze and Lindsay Heinze each hit solo home runs.

Brooke Hutto pitched out of a two-on, two-out jam in the sixth to keep the game even.  She worked 5.1 innings to improve to 8-0 on the season.

McLaughlin had two of the Hatters' six hits on the day, while Ross scored two runs.  Kelsey Waters extended her hitting streak to 15 games in a row.

Stetson's three midweek wins consisted of two one-run games and one two-run game.

The Hatters will host the Stetson Westin Invitational this weekend at Patricia Wilson Field.  The team will face North Dakota State and Manhattan on Friday.
