Hatters Fall Twice at USC Upstate

Ashly Smith Hits Home Run No. 5

Spartanburg, S.C. -- The Stetson softball team dropped a both ends of a doubleheader at USC Upstate Friday, falling 9-0 and 2-1 to the Spartans at Cyrill Stadium.

Ashly Smith hit her fifth home run of the year and Jessie TenBroeck registered a pair of doubles to lead the offense.

Brooke Hutto was solid in the circle for the Hatters in game two.  She allowed two unearned runs in six innings of work while striking out one.  She held USC Upstate (35-10, 8-3 ASUN) to 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and helped strand 11 Spartans on base.

Stetson (24-13, 2-6 ASUN), meanwhile, left nine runners on base in game two.  Smith's home run came in the top of the sixth inning to straight away center field.  It was her fifth home run of the season and the 10th of her career.  It was also Stetson's first road home run since May 7, 2015.

TenBroeck's two doubles gives her 25 for her career.  Jazz Vasquez also had two hits in game two, along with another diving catch in center field.  Tara Walding and Molly McLaughlin also recorded hits for the Hatters.

Stetson was without head coach Frank Griffin who is attending to a family situation.

The teams will play the series finale at 1 p.m. Saturday.
