Hatters Drop Series Finale 9-2

Jessie TenBroeck breaks ASUN steals record

Spartanburg, S.C. -- The Hatters led 2-0 early, but a six-run third inning helped propel USC Upstate to a 9-2 victory over visiting Stetson Saturday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium.

Jessie TenBroeck hit her third home run of the season and broke the all-time ASUN stolen base record for the Hatters (24-14, 2-7 ASUN).  The league-leading Spartans improved to 36-10, 9-3.

Stetson got off to a strong start, manufacturing a run without the benefit of a hit in the top of the first.  TenBroeck drew a lead-off walk and stole second for her conference-record-breaking 137th career stolen base.  Jazz Vasquez then sacrificed TenBroeck to third, and Ashly Smith executed a perfect suicide squeeze to plate the first run of the game.

TenBroeck used a quicker route to home plate in the top of the third as she led off with a line drive that kissed off the left field foul pole.  It was her sixth career home run and her third extra-base hit of the series.

The Spartans answered with a six-spot in the bottom of third, then added three runs in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Stetson starter Brooke Hutto allowed six unearned runs in three innings of work.  Chelsea Hostetler pitched three innings of relief.

Linda Ross, Blake Crews, Talli Sharp, Vasquez and TenBroeck each recorded hits for the Hatters.

Stetson will begin a six-game homstand next weekend against UNF.  The teams will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
