Hatters Drop ASUN Doubleheader on Saturday

Waters Goes 4-for-4 in Game One

DeLand, Fla. -- UNF took two high-scoring affairs from the Hatters on Saturday, winning 9-7 and 7-4 to sweep an ASUN doubleheader at Patricia Wilson Field.

Emerging from an offensive slump, Stetson (24-16, 2-9 ASUN) collected 19 hits on the day, including five from Kelsey Waters.  The Hatter senior went 4-for-4 in the first game with two singles, a triple and her fifth home of the season.

UNF (28-20, 7-4), meanwhile, had 21 hits in the two games combined.

"I thought (UNF) outhit us both ball games," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "You have to give them credit for that.  We hit the ball well both games but came up short."

Jessie TenBroeck and Jazz Vasquez each recorded four hits for the Hatters.  TenBroeck also scored four runs, including the 150th run of her career, and stole three bases, bringing her season total to 46.  Vasquez scored three runs and Tara Walding drove in a pair.

"I have seen a huge attitude change in practice," Griffin said. "I think that has been very healthy for us and for our team chemistry.  I think they have figured out that there are things they can do individually to help us as a team."

Waters' huge Game 1 began with a two-run blast to right field in the bottom of the first inning to give Stetson a 2-0 lead.  Her RBI single to center in the third inning put Stetson ahead 3-0.  Then in the fourth, she sliced an RBI triple down the left field line to give the Hatters a 6-0 lead.  It was her league-leading seventh triple of the year and 12th of her career.

However, UNF scored three in the fifth inning and six in the sixth to take the lead for good.  Stetson scored once in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Ashly Smith but could not pull any closer.

In game two, it was the Ospreys who jumped out to a 7-0 lead and the Hatters who tried to pull off a comeback.  Stetson scored four times in the bottom of the sixth and had the bases loaded with two outs, but relief pitcher Amanda Blanchard got the Ospreys off the hook.

The teams will play the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.  The Hatters will honor their seniors prior to the game.
