Late Goal Sinks Hatters in Overtime

DeLAND—Mercer's Eva Thorn scored the game winning goal with 35 seconds left in the second overtime period, as the visiting Bears edged Stetson, 13-12, in an Atlantic Sun Conference game on Saturday at the Athletic Training Center.

Mercer (11-3, 6-1) sent the game into overtime when Lindsey Zeltwanger scored with 40 seconds left to make it a 12-12 affair.

Stetson's defense limited the ASUN's top scoring team to well below its average. Mercer entered averaging 17.5 goals per game. Even so, head coach Christy Leach wasn't pleased with her team's overall play

"Our shooting percentage was too low again," Leach said of the Hatters' 12-for-33 shooting effort. "I think that made a huge difference. Our turnovers came at the most crucial times. Those were the big things today."

Stetson (5-9, 5-2) committed 20 turnovers, six more than the Bears. But even with some sloppiness, the Hatters appeared to have control of the game midway through the second half.

Leading 7-5 at halftime the Hatters opened the second half with three straight goals, the last by Lindsay Summers, which gave Stetson a 10-5 lead with 22:10 to play.

Mercer responded by scoring six of the next seven goals to tie the game at 11-11. Shelby Lehmann's goal with 3:13 to go gave the Hatters a 12-11 lead but Stetson couldn't hold on.

With just three conference games remaining, the Hatters are still looking to sew up an ASUN Tournament bid. With just three games left in the regular season, Stetson has some work to do.

"We still have three more conference games and that's going to be an important stretch for us," leach said.

Sam Maguire, Maddie Holvey, Taylor Patrizi and Summers each scored two goals to lead the Stetson offense. Liza Diamond made 14 saves in goal.

The Hatters return to action when they visit Furman, 5 p.m., April 21.
