Hatters Drop Wild Affair at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C.—Furman scored four goals in a five-minute span late in the second half to hold off a furious Stetson rally down the stretch as the Hatters suffered a 19-14 loss in Atlantic Sun Conference play, Friday at Paladin Stadium.

Stetson (5-10 overall, 5-3 ASUN) trailed 15-6 with just over 17 minutes to play, but the Hatters got back in the game by scoring the next seven goals.

The scoring spree started when Sandra Stephan scored an unassisted goal. Lindsay Summers followed with a score and Karli Maguire scored three straight goals over the next two minutes to get the Hatters with 15-12. Stephan capped the run with her fourth goal of the night as the Hatters pulled to within 15-13 with 7:41 left.

But the Paladins regrouped and regained control of the game with four goals between the 6:41 and 1:39 mark. A pair of Abby Shields scores sandwiched around two by Hannah Feinberg gave the Paladins a 19-13 advantage.

Stephan tallied her fifth goal of the night with three seconds left for the final score.

The Hatters and Paladins battled to a draw over the game's first 25 minutes before Stetson fell behind heading into the second half. With the game tied 6-6, Furman closed the half with a pair of goals for an 8-6 halftime lead. The Paladins then opened the second half with seven unanswered scores to make it 15-6, setting the stage for a wild finish.
