Hatters Drop Regular-Season Finale

DeLAND—Stetson's Sam Maguire reached a program milestone but the Hatters suffered a 19-5 loss to Atlantic Sun Conference leader Jacksonville in the regular-season finale for both teams, Friday at the Athletic Training Center.

Maguire scored twice on Friday, becoming the first player in Stetson history to reach 40 goals in a season. The Hatters (5-12 overall, 5-5 ASUN), however, struggled to keep up with the Dolphins throughout the game.

Jacksonville (12-5, 9-1) opened with a pair of goals before Maguire scored to make it 2-1. Two more scores by JU made it 4-1, but Karli Maguire found the back of the net to make it 4-2.

The Dolphins then took control of the game, scoring eight straight goals and taking a 12-2 lead into halftime.

In the second half, JU continued to control play. The Hatters enjoyed goals by Sandra Stephan, Maddie Holvey and Sam Maguire but JU never led by fewer than 10.

Stetson goalie Liza Diamond faced 39 shots and made 16 saves, a career high. Diamond also added six ground balls.

Courtney Valdez led Jacksonville with six goals.

The Hatters now await their post-season fate as the ASUN schedule runs through Sunday. Pairings will be announced late that evening.
