Hatters Split With FGCU

Hosteter fires three-hit shutout in game two

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson needed a big performance out of Chelsea Hostetler Saturday, and the Hatter junior came through in the clutch.

Hosteter needed just 66 pitches to toss a three-hit shutout Saturday afternoon as the Hatters took game two of a doubleheader 3-0 over Florida Gulf Coast.  The Eagles won game one 5-1 as the teams split their ASUN twin bill at Patricia Wilson Field.

Hostetler was effective from start to finish, locating her change-up and drop ball with confidence. Forty-three of her 66 pitches were strikes. She scattered three hits - one in the second and two in the seventh before getting Morgan White to fly out to end the game.

"(Chelsea) kept her pitches down," head coach Frank Griffin said.  "She stayed in control.  She didn't throw a lot of balls.  Her defense backed her up really well, and she finished strong.  She used her change-up well, I thought.  That was her biggest tool today."

Stetson (26-17, 4-10 ASUN) took the lead in the bottom of the second on a two-out, two-run single by Maggie Fritts.  The Hatters added a run in the third when Jazz Vasquez doubled, stole third, and scored on a wild throw.

Hostetler (2-1) took over from there, retiring 12 of the 13 batters through the middle innings.  For the game she struck out two, walked none, and did not allow a lead-off batter to reach base in any inning.

"It was very important to get the first out and keeps the walks to a minimum," Hostetler said.  "I was trying to keep my pitches low in the zone, (use) my change-ups and offspeeds.  Our defense was put to work and I trusted them.  Our defense was amazing."

Stetson's outfield made six catches, while the infield tracked down eight grounders and four pop outs.  There was also a line drive that deflected off of third baseman Linda Ross's glove right over to Molly McLaughlin at short for the rare 5-6 putout.

Vasquez and Ashly Smith each had two hits and a run scored.

In game one, Stetson led 1-0 after six innings, but the Eagles (23-27, 5-8) scored five times in the top of the seventh to pull out the win.  Kelsey Waters went 2-for-3 with an RBI squeeze bunt and two stolen bases.  Jessie TenBroeck had a double and a run scored.

Stetson had won 77 in a row when leading after six.

The teams will play the rubber game of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
