Brianti Saunders Wins NCAA Statistical Title for Free Throw Percentage

Senior leads the nation with a .940 percentage

DeLand, Fla. -- Missing just eight free throw attempts all season long, Stetson University senior Brianti Saunders has claimed the 2016-17 NCAA Division I statistical championship for free throw percentage.

Saunders made 126 of her 134 free throws on the season, good for a NCAA-best .940 percentage.  That mark set both Stetson and ASUN single-season records, and it ranks as the 11th-highest single-season free throw percentage in NCAA history.

Saunders went the entire season without ever missing two consecutive free throws.  She had free throw streaks of 10 in a row or more six times and three steaks of over 20 in a row.  She finished her career having made 22 consecutive free throws and 44 of her final 45 attempts.

In the final NCAA statistical report, Saunders edged Iowa State's Bridget Carleton, who finished the season with a .939 free throw percentage.

Saunders, the ASUN Player of the Year, is the second Stetson women's basketball player to win a statistical championship in school history.  Victoria McGowan led the country with three triple-doubles in 2012.

Saunders finished her career with an all-time free throw percentage of .855.  That ranks second all-time in school history behind Nefertiti Walker's mark of .916.

The Hatters finished the 2016-17 season with a 26-7 record, won their first-ever ASUN regular season championship and advanced to postseason play for the seventh year in a row.
