Hatters Drop a Pair of Heartbreakers in Extras

Stetson eliminated from ASUN tournament contention

Jacksonville, Fla. -- Jacksonville eliminated Stetson from postseason contention with two extra inning victories over the Hatters Saturday afternoon at the Pruitt Softball Complex.

The Dolphins (29-23, 7-10 ASUN) won by scores of 7-6 in eight innings and 8-7 in nine innings to clinch the final berth to next week's ASUN tournament in Nashville, Tenn.

An offense heavy day saw the teams combine for 28 runs and 52 hits.  Stetson and JU constantly battled from behind, erasing five different leads throughout the doubleheader.

Maggie Fritts hit a three-run home run in game one for the Hatters (26-20, 4-13 ASUN), while Ashly Smith drove in three runs as well.

Smith then hit a two-run home run game two, giving her five RBI on the day.

The Hatters survived being down to their final out in the seventh inning of game two. Trailing 7-6 with the bases empty and two outs, Smith singled to left and moved to second on a fielding error by the shortstop. Down 0-2 in the count, Blake Crews fouled off two pitches and took another before punching a single up the middle to score Smith with the tying run.

Jessie TenBroeck had four hits, three runs, and two RBI in the doubleheader.  She also stole her 48th base of the season.

Fritts and Smith also collected four hits on the day, while Crews and Waters tallied three hits apiece.  Waters stole her 30th base of the year, becoming the sixth player in school history to reach that milestone.

Molly McLaughlin also recorded a pair of hits in game one, and Talli Sharp had two hits in game two.

Ciera Jones and Bethany Kursch had the game-winning hits for the Dolphins.

The teams will play again at 1 p.m. Sunday.
