Hatters Fall to Dartmouth 38-7 in Home Opener

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University football team was defeated by Dartmouth College, 38-7, in the Hatters 2017 home opener at Spec Martin Stadium.

The loss leaves the Hatters at 0-3 on the season, while Dartmouth, who opened its 2017 season tonight, is 1-0 on the year.

After a close game at halftime that saw Dartmouth leading 10-7, the visiting Big Green opened the third quarter by scoring on back-to-back drives to pull ahead 24-7 midway through the period. The Big Green opened the third quarter by marching down the field on a nine play 71-yard drive, taking 3:47 off the clock, ending on a one yard touchdown run by running back Jared Gerbino.

Stetson went three and out on the ensuing drive, before Dartmouth scampered off a five play 53-yard drive which was capped off by a five-yard touchdown catch by wide receiver Cam Poole.

Dartmouth's fast start to the second half was a stark contrast to how the game started when in the first quarter the two teams combined for 11 drives that resulted in seven punts, three turnovers, and a missed field goal, and had a scoreless tie.

Dartmouth got on the board first with 10:01 remaining in the second quarter when running back Rashaad Cooper scored on a 10-yard touchdown run. The Hatters immediately answered the call by going on an impressive 13 play 75 yard drive which was capped off by a six yard touchdown reception by freshman wide receiver Justin Jordan, the first touchdown of his NCAA career. The Big Green retook the lead just before halftime on a 25-yard field goal with seventeen seconds remaining.

Dartmouth outscored Stetson 28-0 in the second half, including 21-0 in the third quarter. Dartmouth's third of three touchdowns in the third quarter came on a 30 yard interception return by defensive back DJ Avery to make the score 31-7 with 3:06 remaining. A 16-yard touchdown run by Big Green running back running back Matthew Shearin in the fourth quarter rounded out the scoring for the game.

"There are no two ways about it we got our butts kicked by a superior team in every facet of the game," head coach Roger Hughes said. "We're committing penalties when we have drives going on. We're not blocking very well, we're not throwing very well, and we're not running very well."

In total, Dartmouth out gained Stetson 406-94 in total yards. The Big Green outgained the Hatters' running game by 327 yards. Dartmouth ran for 324 yards, while the Hatters had -3. Sophomore running back Bryce Blackmon led the Stetson rushing attack with 18 yards on 15 carries. Stetson outgained Dartmouth through the air by a 97-82 margin. Junior quarterback Colin McGovern completed 17 of 30 passes for 88 yards, plus a touchdown. Reserve quarterback sophomore Cole Martin completed 3-of-3 passes for nine yards after coming in the game in the fourth quarter. For the second week in a row, freshman wide receiver Justin Jordan led the Hatters in receptions and receiving yards. He caught seven passes for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, senior defensive back Eric Martin and sophomore linebacker Rich Stanzione each had 15 total tackles and seven of which was solo. Colby Duncan added 13 total tackles, 10 solo tackles and two tackles for loss. Graduate linebacker Jeb Boudreaux added eight total tackles, five solo tackles and three tackles for loss.

"Silver lining, there is not quit in this team and these guys are dedicated to each other and we are not pointing fingers or anything like that," Hughes said. "But the bottom line is there is no magic thing to happen. We have to block better, we have to run better, we have to tackle better, we have to block better, we have to snap it better, we have to cover better, we have to kick the ball better, we have to cover kicks better, there is room for improvement in every facet of the game."

The Hatters return to action next Saturday for a home contest against Campbell University at 4 p.m.
