Collins Breaks Career Goals Record as Hats Get Big Road Win

Stetson senior Sarah Collins scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with less than two minutes to play, as the Hatters downed Grand Canyon, 2-1, on Friday in Phoenix, Ariz.

After not practicing for a week due to Hurricane Irma, the Hatters (5-2-0) were sluggish in the first half and failed to take an official shot. But Collins got the Hatters started midway through the second half.

"I was so proud of the kind of grit, intensity and toughness we showed," head coach Manoj Khettry said. "We knew it wasn't going to be an artistic masterpiece, not having played a competitive match in 13 days and only being able to train once since we had to evacuate, but our players were up for the fight and were able to beat a much fresher and sharper GCU team who really took it to us from the get-go."

Collins' goals not only helped extend the Hatters' winning streak to four, but it also made Collins the all-time leading goal scorer in program history. She tied – and later passed – former Hatter Tessa Gavilsky with her 34th and 35th career goals. Collins now has 84 career points and is 13 behind the program-leading 97 totaled by Gavilsky from 2007-10.

"Sarah had kind of a quiet first half, but she really stepped up as a leader and scored two gritty goals," Khettry said. "I couldn't be happier for her to be the new career leading goal-scorer. She deserves it, she has earned it and I hope she continues to lead the way like she did tonight. We need her to continue to be an example for our team."

The Hatters scored their first goal midway through the first half. Greta Watkins bombed a free kick to Collins from 50 yards away, and Collins made one move and poked a shot into the upper right corner of the goal in the 67th minute to give the Hatters a 1-0 lead.

The Antelopes (3-5-1) tied the game less than 10 minutes later on a header by Madison Cox, tying the game at 1-1. The contest appeared headed for overtime before Collins and Watkins connected again in the 88th minute.

Watkins once again launched a pass to Collins from better than 50 yards out. The ball bounced once near the top of the box, Collins picked it up, dribbled left and fired a shot past GCU keeper Blakely Fraasch into the left corner for a 2-1 lead and ultimately a victory.

The Antelopes were credited with 28 shots and Stetson keeper Emily Plotz was awarded 15 saves, a career high. Stetson took just six shots, but half were on-goal.

The Hatters next face Charleston Southern, 2 p.m., Sunday in Charleston, S.C.
