Hatters, Buccaneers Battle to 1-1 Draw

Stetson and Charleston Southern played to a 1-1- draw in women's soccer, Sunday in Charleston, S.C.

The teams combined for 36 shots, including 23 by the Hatters. But both teams had trouble penetrating the goal line, and played the final 75 minutes of the match without a score.

"It's disappointing to tie considering the statistical domination we had with shots and shots on goal," Stetson head coach Manoj Khettry said, "but we know from Friday what it would have felt like to lose in the same situation. Our players aren't happy about getting a tie, and I like their attitude."

Florencia Baldassini put the Hatters (5-2-1) on the board first, scoring off a free kick in the 20th minute. It was the sophomore's first goal of the season and second of her career.

Charleston Southern (2-5-1) answered back less than five minutes later when Jazzin Clark tied it up with her first goal of the season.

Of Stetson's 23 shots, 11 were on-goal. Charleston Southern keeper Alyssa Dellacqua made nine saves while Stetson's Emily Plotz stopped four shots.

"One area we want to improve is holding a lead; we had the lead twice this weekend and lost it both times," Khettry said. "Fortunately we were able to pull out a win on Friday but today we could only manage a draw. We can improve in this area and we know it. We are all excited about getting back to campus, training regularly and preparing for the start of the conference.

The Hatters return home on Saturday when they open ASUN Conference play against FGCU. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Athletic Training Center.
