Hatters Blank Bucknell for Season's First Win

Deniz Dogan scored twice and added an assist, and Joseph Melong recorded a shutout in his first career start in goal to help Stetson head coach Kyle Gookins earn his first career victory as the Hatters downed Bucknell, 3-0, Sunday at the Athletic Training Center.
 
Dogan, a freshman, put Stetson on the board early on, sinking a penalty kick in the sixth minute. The PK was set up when Jared Huber was fouled just as he entered the right side of the box.
 
The Hatters maintained the 1-0 lead into the second half before they scored twice in less than five minutes early in the second half. Daniel O'Brien started the scoring when he hammered home a shot from 12 yards away in the 51st minute.
 
Dogan made it a 3-0 game in the 56th minute when he took a perfect cross from Jared Huber and scored from right in front of the goal.
 
While the Hatters were scoring their most goals in two years, Melong and the defense were doing their jobs. The Bison managed 18 shots, but just six were on-goal, and Melong stopped all of them.  The junior has missed the past two seasons with injury and was seeing the first action of his career on Sunday.
 
The Hatters next visit Northern Illinois, 8:30 p.m., Friday.
