Hatters Keep Rolling With 2-0 Win at Upstate

Deniz Dogan scored a pair of goals to keep Stetson undefeated in ASUN Conference play as the Hatters downed USC Upstate, 2-0, Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C.

The win extends Stetson's winning streak to four and improves the Hatters to 5-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play. This is Stetson's best start to a conference season since the 2010 squad opened league play with four straight wins. Upstate falls to 2-7-1, 0-3-0.

Despite the win, head coach Kyle Gookins was not entirely pleased.

"We were not at our best tonight," Gookins said. "Credit to Upstate; they put us on our heels in the second half. We scored a great free kick in the first half and had chances to score a second before halftime. We stayed strong and stayed together in order to keep the clean sheet. Deniz added his second goal late to put the game away. We will enjoy the three points, but will train hard this week to get ready for our next game."

Dogan, Stetson's leading scorer with four goals, provided all the offense the Hatters needed when he scored on a free kick with 16 minutes remaining the first half.

Dogan put the game away with just over three minutes to play after a Daniel O'Brien shot hit the post and rebounded directly to Dogan, who beat the keeper for his second score of the night.

Once again the Stetson defense was up to the task, notching its third shutout of the year and second in three conference games. Goalkeeper Joe Melong made five saves.

The Hatters next visit UCF, 7 p.m., Wednesday.
