Freshmen Help Guide Hatters Past NJIT

Michelle Pruitt scores a career-high 17 points

DeLand, Fla. -- Brittney Chambers recorded a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds as Stetson rolled to a 73-55 victory over NJIT Monday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (11-8, 2-1 ASUN) won their sixth in a row at home and improved to 2-1 in conference play.  The Highlanders fell to 2-16, 0-3.

Stetson's five freshmen combined for 37 points, including a career-high 17 from Michelle Pruitt and 12 from Shania Meertens.

"I thought Shania and Michelle had really good games today, probably the best games I have seen both of them play," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "Both of them were terrific for 40 minutes.  I was really happy about that and seeing how much they have improved."

Pruitt scored 11 points in the second quarter alone, helping Stetson build a 32-24 halftime lead.  She finished the game 6-for-10 from the floor with five rebounds.

"Michelle finished really well around the basket," Bria said.  "We have worked a lot on her back-to-the-basket moves.  She is giving us a lot of effort.  She is playing well the last two games."

Meertens, meanwhile, scored eight of her 12 points in the second half and added six rebounds in 36 minutes.

"I thought Shania had some great drives to the basket," Bria said.  "She just did what she did well.  She was also very good for us defensively."

After going for 17 & 9 on Saturday, Chambers delivered a 24-point, 11-rebound performance Monday.  She was 9-for-14 from the field and 2-for-3 from behind the arc.

"Brittney was just awesome, especially in the second half," Bria said.  "She went to work today.  She did everything."

Megan Vincent added four blocks and a season-high 10 rebounds, while McKenna Beach dished out six assists.

The Hatters held a 47-29 advantage on the glass, but committed 20 turnovers as a team.

Stetson will travel to Nashville to face Lipscomb at 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
