Hatters Fall in ASUN Title Game

Lipscomb's Logan Paynter scored a pair of goals to lead the Bisons to a 2-0 win over Stetson in the ASUN Conference Tournament championship game, Saturday at Lipscomb Soccer Complex in Nashville, Tenn.

The win sends the Bisons (9-9) to the NCAA College Cup for the second straight year. Stetson, playing in its first ASSUN championship game since 2010, ends the season with a 7-10-2 overall record.

On a frigid night which saw game time temperatures hovering near freezing, neither team mounted much offense in the early going. Paynter, the ASUN Player of the Year and Tournament MVP, broke the scoreless deadlock with a goal in the 40th minute. Noah Gulden was credited with the assist.

The 1-0 lead remained until Paynter struck again in the 54th minute, getting an assist from Ben Locke to give the Bisons a 2-0 lead.

From there Lipscomb kept the Hatters at bay. Stetson mustered just three shots in the second half, and none were on goal. The Hatters had five shots for the game.

Stetson goalkeeper Braeden Luna, who earned a spot on the all-tournament team, faced 14 shots and made four saves.

Freshman Lewis Scattergood, who scored three goals for Stetson in three tournament games, joined Luna on the all-tournament team.
