Hatters Downed at Bethune-Cookman

Four Stetson players scored in double figures but it wasn't enough as the Hatters stumbled in an 84-74 loss to Bethune-Cookman, Monday at Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach.

Stetson (1-6) lost its sixth straight game despite 16 points and 10 rebounds from Abayomi Iyiola, the sophomore's second straight double-double. His efforts on the glass weren't enough to offset a 54-35 rebounding disparity and a 41 percent team shooting effort.

A back-and-forth first half turned against the Hatters in the final minutes before halftime when Bethune's Malik Maitland began to heat up. Maitland scored eight of his game-high 23 points in the final 6:07, helping turn Stetson's 23-20 lead into a 38-29 deficit at halftime.

Maitland's layup with 17:42 left in the second half gave the Wildcats (3-4) their first double figure lead of the game at 44-33. Stetson eventually whittled Bethune's lead to 46-41, but the Wildcats responded with an 8-0 run to keep the Hatters at bay.

The Wildcats were able to maintain a double-digit advantage for much of the game's remainder until the Hatters made a final charge in the final minutes to get the final margin to 10.

Joining Iyiola in double figures were Marques Sumner (14), Christiaan Jones (12) and Leo Goodman (11). Kenny Aninye added 9 points and 8 assists.

Maitland was 6 of 11 from the field and 8 of 9 from the line. He also added 8 assists, 4 boards and 3 steals.

The Hatters shot just 40.5 percent from the field, while Bethune-Cookman hit at a 47.1 percent clip.

Quoting Coach Williams
"I thought we started out well but in the end they really dominated us on the glass. I thought our guys were able to attack off the dribble and make some plays but we have to be more consistent in doing that. It's not because people aren't trying; maybe they're trying too hard because they want it so bad. But we have to find a way to execute and defend. You can't get outrebounded by 19 and expect to get the win."
