Hatters Split on Day Two of Stetson Lead-Off Classic

Ashly Smith triples twice and drives in three

DeLand, Fla. -- Lizzie Shubert hit her first career home run and Ashly Smith hit a pair of triples as Stetson defeated Akron 10-1 Saturday evening at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Hatters fell to the College of Charleston 10-0 in the afternoon and finished the Stetson Lead-Off Classic with a 2-2 mark.

Smith became just the sixth player on school history to hit two triples in the same game, and the first since Ashley Cowart did so against the College of Charleston in 2002.

Tori Perkins (1-1) allowed just four hits and one run over five innings to earn the victory.

Shubert got the Hatters out to a 2-0 lead with a 2-run home run to leftcenter in the top of the first inning.  Devin Lewis had walked with two outs to keep the inning alive.

Smith's first triple came with the bases loaded in the top of the second and gave Stetson a 5-0 advantage.  She then tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Shubert in the fourth to make it a 6-0 Stetson lead.

In the fifth, the Hatters got a 2-run single from Lewis and an RBI double from Shubert to break the game wide open.   Perkins retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth to complete the victory.

Shubert finished the game with four RBI.

Against the College of Charleston, Stetson committed five errors that led to six unearned runs.  Smith went 2-for-2 at the plate and totaled four hits overall on the day.

Stetson will face Hofstra and George Washington on Friday at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic at ESPN's Wide World of Sports.
