Hatters Fall Twice at Citrus Blossom Classic

Ashly Smith doubles twice against GW

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. -- Stetson dropped its first two games of the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Classic Friday, falling 7-1 to Hofstra and 3-2 to George Washington at ESPN's Wide World of Sports.

Ashly Smith went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to lead the Hatters (2-4) against George Washington.  Kasey Fava also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Against Hofstra (5-2), the Hatters were held hitless through six innings, but in the seventh, Molly McLaughlin singled and scored on a double by Lizzie Shubert to break up the no-hit and shutout bid.

In the nightcap, Stetson took advantage of an illegal substitution to score its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth.  Maggie Fritts struck out to start the inning, but after head coach Frank Griffin alerted the umpires that George Washington's catcher had not been re-entered, Fritts was able to return to the batter's box.  She promptly singled to left, and later scored on an infield single by Fava.

George Washington (2-0) tied the game in the top of the fifth and took a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh.

Stetson threatened to pull even in the bottom of the seventh after Fava singled and scored on a Smith's double into the left field corner. Smith would get no further, however, and the Colonials held on for the victory.

Chelsea Hostetler (0-1) and Curstin Taylor pitched game 1, while Jaime Tino and Tori Perkins (1-2) pitched game 2.

The Citrus Blossom Classic continues Saturday as Stetson faces Bethune-Cookman at 11 a.m. and LIU-Brooklyn at 1:30 p.m.
