Hatters Split on Opening Day

Head Coach Frank Griffin Wins No. 700

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson pounded out eight runs on 12 hits in a season-opening 8-0 win over Akron Friday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.  The win was the 700th victory for head coach Frank Griffin in his 22 seasons with the Hatters.  Stetson fell 2-1 to Kansas in the nightcap to finish 1-1 on opening day.

In the opener, freshman Jaime Tino tossed a one-hit shutout in her collegiate debut, holding Akron (0-2) to just one hit - a second-inning single by Sydney Jascoe.  She walked three and struck out six.

Stetson jumped on Zips starter Kooper Vertz with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Freshman Lizzie Shubert delivered a two-run single in her first career at-bat, and Blake Crews added an RBI single to give Stetson a 3-0 lead.

Freshman Devin Lewis lined a two-run the double in the bottom of the second to make it 5-0 Stetson, ending the day for Vertz.

Maggie Fritts drove in two more runs with a bases-loaded single in the fourth, and Molly McLaughlin hit a walk-off single to center in the fifth, allowing Danielle Diaz to scamper home with the winning run.

All five Stetson freshmen started in the season opener.  Offensively, they combined to go 5-for-9 with three runs and four RBI.

Stetson was 8-for-14 against Akron with runners in scoring position.

Against Kansas, however, Stetson could not capitalize on its scoring opportunities.  The Hatters were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and twice having runners at second and third and no outs.  A Kansas error in the seventh led to Stetson's only run, but the Jayhawks worked out of a bases-loaded jam to escape with the victory.

Jessie Roane hit a two-run home run for Kansas in the bottom of the fourth that proved to be the difference in the game.  The loss spoiled a strong performance by Stetson pitcher Tori Pekrins, who allowed just four hits and no walks over six innings.  She threw just 65 pitches in a complete game effort.

The Hatters will return to action Saturday against the College of Charleston at 4 p.m. and Akron at 6:30 p.m.

Notes:
  • Defensively, Stetson did not commit an error in 51 chances on the day
  • The Hatters outhit their opponents 13-5
  • Stetson was 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts
  • Catcher Devin Lewis threw out two runners attempting to steal
  • Stetson has won five straight season openers
