Hatters Sweep Doubleheader From Rider

Tori Perkins Wins Twice in the Circle

DeLand, Fla. -- Ashly Smith and Devin Lewis each went deep while Tori Perkins picked up a pair wins in the circle as Stetson swept a doubleheader from Rider 5-1 and 6-5 Tuesday evening at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Hatters (18-9) have won 11 of their last 12 and 16 of their last 18 games overall.

Perkins battled in the circle, pitching 12 innings and throwing 199 pitches in the two games combined.  She finished the night on a high note, striking out Melanie Wilkinson with the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position to preserve the Hatters' 6-5 win in Game 2.

In Game 1, Stetson's bats came alive in the middle innings as the Hatters scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth to pull away.  Maggie Fritts went 2-for-3 with a single, a triple, a run scored and an RBI to lead the attack.  The Hatters walked nine times and stole eight bases as a team, including three steals by Kasey Fava

Perkins went the distance to register her 30th career win, allowing one unearned run while walking none and striking out six.

In Game 2, Jaime Tino worked the first two-plus innings while Perkins pitched the final five in relief.

Stetson had to rally from behind as the Broncs (2-13) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third inning.  The Hatters tied the game in the fourth when Lizzie Shubert sprinted home to beat a force play at the plate on an infield grounder by Danielle Diaz.

Smith led off the fifth with a solo home run to right to give Stetson a 4-3 lead, and Lewis belted one out to center later in the inning to make it a 5-3 game.  It was her third home run in the past five games.  Lewis now leads the team with five homers on the season.

The Hatters added what proved to be a key insurance run in the sixth, then held on as Rider rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh.  Perkins (11-5) retired the final three batters - two by groundout and one by strikeout - to earn her ASUN-leading 11th win of the year.  She has also won eight games in a row.

Stetson will host George Mason and Manhattan on Thursday.

Notes:
  • Kasey Fava extended her reached base streak to 22 games
  • Fava had five steals on the day and leads the ASUN in stolen bases (23)
  • Ashly Smith leads the ASUN in RBI (24)
  • Stetson improved to 6-3 in one-run games
  • The Hatters are 10-0 when leading after 5 innings
