Stetson senior pitcher/first baseman/designated hitter
Brooks Wilson was named the ASUN Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts last week as the Hatters went 4-2.
Â
Wilson, who is hitting regularly this season for the first time in his career, was previously named ASUN Pitcher of the Week in March of 2016 after pitching a two-hit shutout against The Citadel.
Â
The Lakeland native is the 25
th player in Stetson history to earn ASUN Player of the Week honors, but is the first in school history to have earned both a Player and Pitcher of the Week award in his career.
Â
Wilson becomes the eighth player in ASUN history to have earned both awards in their careers. He joins with: Corbin Olmstead (UNF), Gaither Bumgardner (USC Upstate), D.J. Johnson (Mercer), Nate Woods (Belmont), Dan Maier (Jacksonville), Shawn Barrett (Mercer) and Matt Parker (Mercer).
Â
Wilson is making a case, one game and one day at a time, that he is the best all-around player in the ASUN and one of the best in the nation. He appeared on the mound in two games last week, recording eight strikeouts in four innings of work without allowing a run. He earned the win in Stetson's 11-inning victory over Rhode Island when, after starting the game at first base and pitching three shutout innings, he drew a one-out walk in the 11th, stole second and then scored on
Andrew MacNeil's single.
Â
He had hits in the 7th and 9th inning in the game. It was his first win of the year and the first stolen base of his career.
Â
In the first game of the day, Wilson singled in a run in the seventh as the Hatters closed to within 6-5 after trailing 6-0 early. He also had an RBI double in that game and pitched a shutout inning. In a start against Army at first base he had three hits, including a double, and scored twice while also making a highlight play at first, diving head first to catch a bunt in the first inning.
Â
He led the Hatters with a .500 average during the week, raising his season average to .350 and he is tied for the team lead with five doubles this season.
Â
On the mound, Wilson has appeared in 11 of 20 games this year and has worked 18 1/3 shutout innings, allowing just five hits and three walks with 27 strikeouts. He leads the nation with eight saves.
Â
Wilson and the Hatters will close out their 21-game season-opening home stand on Wednesday night when they host FIU at Melching Field. That game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
Â
The Hatters will travel north, to Washington, D.C., this weekend for a three-game series at the University of Maryland. The next home game, after Wednesday, will be on Thursday, March 29 when Stetson opens a three-game series against Bethune-Cookman.
