Hatters Fall Twice in ASUN Opener

Lizzie Shubert Has Four Hits on the Day

Fort Myers, Fla. -- In the first ASUN action of the season, Stetson dropped both ends of a doubleheader to FGCU, 2-0 and 9-5 Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex.

Eagles pitcher Riley Randolph threw a four-hit shutout in game 1, then tossed 4.1 shutout innings in game 2.

Lizzie Shubert had four hits on the day to lead the Hatters (20-12, 0-2 ASUN), including her first career triple in game 1 and an RBI double in game 2.

Kasey Fava extended her reached-base streak to 27 games, and Blake Crews cut down three runners on the bases.

In game 2, the Hatters jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first.  Fava singled, stole second, moved to third and then scored on a pair of throwing errors.  With one out, Shubert lined a double into the rightcenter field gap scoring Ashly Smith for the second run of the inning.  After two walks and a pitching change, Crews singled home two more with a base hit up the middle.  Linda Ross capped the inning with a single to right that scored Maggie Fritts.

FGCU (27-6, 2-0) bounced back with two in the first and six in the second to take the lead.  Randolph entered with two outs in the third and held the Hatters scoreless the rest of the way.

Tori Perkins went the distance in game 1, allowing just one earned run and six hits, but had her nine-game win streak snapped.  Chelsea Hostetler pitched a solid 4.2 innings of relief in game 2.

The teams will play the final game of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
