Perkins One-Hitter Lifts Hatters to Road Win at FGCU

Ashly Smith and Maggie Fritts each go deep

Fort Myers, Fla. -- Ashly Smith and Maggie Fritts provided the offensive fireworks and Tori Perkins was brilliant in the circle as Stetson blanked Florida Gulf Coast 3-0 Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex.

Perkins allowed just one hit - an infield single in the third inning - as the Hatters (21-12, 1-2 ASUN) bounced back from Saturday's sweep to post their first conference win of the year.

"I thought we played a great ball game," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "I saw some freshmen making some plays that were unbelievable.  Our shortstop and third baseman were outstanding.  We got some big hits from Ashly and Maggie.  We have nicknamed Tori 'bulldog,' and boy, she was a bulldog today.  She gave it her all every inning, every pitch.  FGCU is a great team.  I am just happy to leave here with a win."

The Eagles (27-7, 2-1) scored 11 runs on Saturday but Perkins (13-6) shut the door on Sunday.  She walked four and struck out three in recording her third shutout of the season.  The Hatter junior needed just 72 pitches and allowed just one runner past second base.

Smith blasted a two-run home run in the top of third inning to break a scoreless tie.  It was her third home run of the season and the first home run of the season allowed by FGCU starter Taylor Bauman (2-2)

Fritts added an insurance run with a solo shot of Riley Randolph in the seventh.  Randolph had held the Hatters scoreless through her first 12 innings in the series.

The Hatters were strong defensively as well as Danielle Diaz collected five assists at third base and Fritts made several nice catches in right field.

"Maggie made some outstanding catches out there," Griffin said.  "There was good defense all around."

Stetson will host Lipscomb for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday at Patricia Wilson Field.  The games will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

Notes:
  • Stetson won for just the second time against FGCU in Fort Myers
  • Kasey Fava extended her reached-base streak to 28 games.  That ties Jessica Griffin (2013) and Blake Hoorelbeke (2004) for the longest reached-base streak since 1999
  • Ashly Smith hit her 14th career home run and Maggie Fritts hit her 10th
  • Stetson also shutout FGCU 3-0 in DeLand last season as Chelsea Hostetler pitched a three-hitter
  • Linda Ross was 4-for-7 (.571) in the series
