Hatters Drop a Pair of 2-1 Decisions to Lipscomb

DeLand, Fla. -- Two well-pitched defensive battles both broke Lipscomb's way late as the Lady Bisons swept Stetson in an ASUN doubleheader Friday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.

Lipscomb (22-9, 3-2 ASUN) won each game by identical 2-1 scores, although Game 2 was decided in eight innings.

The Hatters fell to 21-14, 1-4.

A great pitcher's duel in Game 1 saw Chelsea Hostetler and Mandy Jordan each carry no-hitters into the sixth inning and shutouts into the seventh.

Lipscomb finally broke through in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Sarah Higgins and a sacrifice fly by Caitlin Plocheck.

The Hatters fought back in the bottom of the seventh when Kasey Fava singled, moved to second on Ashly Smith's base hit, and later scored on an infield grounder by Lizzie Shubert.  However, Stetson couldn't get the tying run past third base as Lipscomb held on for the one-run victory.

Making just her second start of the year, Hostetler was brilliant, allowing just two hits and one run over six innings.  She walked one and struck out one, and she retired 13 batters on ground ball outs.  She also recorded five assists in the circle.

Jordan allowed two hits, both in the seventh inning, and struck out 10 to pick up the win.

In Game 2, Lipscomb scored one run in the top of the first inning and held that lead until the bottom of the fifth.  The Hatters pulled even when Danielle Diaz was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Molly McLaughlin's single to center.

The score remained deadlocked into extra innings when Plocheck hit an eighth-inning home run to left that eventually proved to be the game-winner.

Chloe Yeager earned the victory after holding Stetson to just one run on three hits over eight innings.  Tori Perkins also went the distance, allowing two runs on 10 hits.

Fava extended her reached base streak to 29 games in Game 1 but did not reach safely in Game 2.  She surpassed Jessica Griffin (2013) and Blake Hoorelbeke's (2004) mark of 28 straight games and now has the longest known reached-base streak in school history, dating back to at least 1994.

Maggie Fritts also threw a runner out at the plate from right field.

The teams will play the series finale at 1 p.m. Saturday.
