Hatters Bounce Back With 5-3 Win Over Lipscomb

Three home runs lead the way for Stetson

DeLand, Fla. -- Lizzie Shubert, Maggie Fritts and Devin Lewis each hit their sixth home runs of the season and Chelsea Hostetler pitched five strong innings of relief as Stetson defeated Lipscomb 5-3 Saturday afternoon in the ASUN series finale at Patricia Wilson Field.

After being held to just two runs in 15 innings on Friday, Stetson's bats came alive Saturday, despite facing the same two Lipscomb pitchers.

"It was a huge win for us, after losing those two 1-run games yesterday," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "We hit the ball much better, and we played some good defense.  It was a big win for us."

Tori Perkins started in the circle for the Hatters (22-14, 2-4 ASUN), but handed the ball off to Hostetler (1-2) in the third.  The Hatter senior allowed just one run and five hits the rest of the way to pick up her first victory of the season.

"I thought Chelsea did an outstanding job coming in after two innings and finishing the game for us," Griffin said.  "It was a great day for her."

Griffin said the three long balls came in handy as well, and Shubert got the ball rolling in the bottom of the first with a two-run shot to left.  That tied the game 2-2.

Fritts lead off the second inning with a solo shot to deep left to give Stetson the lead for good.  Danielle Diaz's single later in the inning knocked Lipscomb starter Mandy Jordan from the game.  That brought in Chloe Yeager, who had also stymied the Hatters on Friday.

"We were too aggressive yesterday (against Yeager)," Griffin said.  "She was throwing a lot of offspeed pitches and change-ups.  You got to wait and try to hit the ball up the middle and backside.  Yesterday we were so far out front of it, we weren't even making contact.  We discussed that, and I think that helped us a lot."

The Hatters broke through against Yeager in the fourth when Lewis led off with a home run down the left field line to put Stetson ahead 4-2.  Fritts then singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a double down the line by Linda Ross.

Caitlin Plocheck pulled the Lady Bisons (22-10, 3-3) to within 5-3 with a sixth-inning home run, but Hostetler closed the door the rest of the way to preserve the victory.

Stetson has now won the finale of each of the first two conference series this season.

The Hatters will visit Kennesaw State next weekend as ASUN play continues.
