The visiting Bethune-Cookman Wildcats thought they had the Hatters right where they wanted them on Saturday night at Melching Field.
Â
The Wildcats (10-18) struck early for a pair of runs in the second inning against Stetson sophomore
Mitchell Senger (4-1) and went to the field with all the confidence in the world.
Â
It took the host Hatters about five minutes to crush that confidence as Stetson (23-5) scored five times on five hits in the bottom of the inning to chase BCU starter Tyler Krull (1-2) and take control of the momentum in the game.
Â
The Hatters went on to take a 7-4 victory, completing a three-game sweep of the Wildcats.
Â
That critical second inning started with consecutive singles from
Brooks Wilson and
Nico Torino. After freshman
Eric Foggo just missed a three-run homer on a fly ball to center,
Austin Bogart delivered a two-run double to tie the game at 2-2.
Jonathan Meola followed with a double to put the Hatters up 3-2.
Â
Junior
Jacob Koos got a second chance against Krull after flying to center in the first inning, and took advantage, blsting a two-run homer to right for a 5-2 Stetson lead. It was the second home run of the year for Koos.
Â
Senger followed up with consecutive perfect innings on the mound, allowing the Hatters to pad their lead. Foggo followed a Torino double in the third with a walk and then moved up when Bogart hit a ground ball to third for a force out. Foggo went to third on a Meola fly ball and then he and Bogart pulled off a double steal, with the Stetson freshman taking home for a 6-2 lead.
Â
In the fourth, Koos reached on an error, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a fly ball from
Jorge Arenas.
Â
Cookman got two more runs off Senger in the fourth thanks to a walk, a double and a pair of infield singles.
Â
Senger came out after working six innings, allowing the four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.
Vlad Nunez worked a scoreless seventh before turning the ball over to
Brooks Wilson. Despite allowing a pair of infield singles in the eighth and a walk in the ninth, Wilson closed out the Wildcats for his NCAA best 12
th save of the year.
Â
Torino led Stetson with two hits in the game. Outside of the five-run second, Stetson managed just two other hits on the night. Jordan Stacy led the Wildcats with two hits
Â
The Hatters will venture back onto the road this week, starting on Tuesday night at UCF. That game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start. Stetson will then open ASUN play on Friday at Kennesaw State. Game times in that series are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Â
The next home game for Stetson is scheduled for April 10 against South Florida.
