Diaz Fuels Comeback as Hatters Sweep Robert Morris

Freshman goes 2-for-3 with walk-off single in the 7th

DeLand, Fla. -- Freshman Danielle Diaz has looked quite comfortable at third base since moving to the new position a week ago.  Now, she is starting to gain some confidence at the plate.

Diaz hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning as Stetson rallied for a 5-4 win over Robert Morris in Game 1 of an Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at Patricia Wilson Field.

Tori Perkins tossed a two-hit shutout in Game 2 as the Hatters (12-8) swept the twinbill and won for the 10th time in their last 11 games.

With Game 1 tied at four in the bottom of the seventh, Lizzie Shubert led off the inning with a ground-rule double to leftcenter field.  She then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Diaz drove one between the outfielders for her first career walk-off hit.

"We got some really big hits from our freshmen in that seventh inning, first the double and then the game-winner," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "Danielle has been making some adjustments at the plate and it is starting to pay off."

The Hatters had trailed 4-2 in the sixth when Diaz started the comeback with a double to leftcenter.  With two outs, Diaz raced all the way around to score on an infield single by Ashly Smith to cut the deficit to 4-3.  Two batters later, Molly McLaughlin drove in Smith with a single field to right to tie the game 4-4.

After allowing four runs in the first three innings, pitcher Jaime Tino (7-2) held the Colonials (3-12) to just one hit the rest of the way.  She walked three and struck out a season-high eight to win her sixth game in a row.

In Game 2, Perkins (5-5) was on cruise control once again, retiring the first 14 batters she faced and carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning.  She settled for a two-hit shutout, her second of the season, with just one walk and four strikeouts.

Shubert made two nice defensive plays at shortstop, including starting a seventh-inning double play where she tagged a runner going to third before firing to first to get the batter.

Offensively, the Hatters scored a run in the first on a sacrifice fly from McLaughlin and a run in the third on an RBI single by Smith.

Smith, Diaz and Shubert each had three hits on the day.  Smith also stole four bases and Kasey Fava stole three.  The Hatters drew 14 walks as a team.

Stetson will host Holy Cross for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Notes:
  • The Hatters improved to 12-3 at home
  • Kasey Fava extended her reached base streak to 15 games
  • Stetson has two walk-off wins and two wins when trailing after 5 innings (Brown, Robert Morris)
